The Story of Shaddow Domain: Episode 2 - Aqua Net and Hair Bands
The early eighties were a great time, anyone who was a teenager at that time was pretty lucky I think. I graduated in 1982. I wasn't over encumbered with ambition, but I did want to open a store and I had a pretty good idea what it would look like. I envisioned a tattoo artist, a stylist specializing in spikes and crazy color and some sort of eating establishment. At a time ruled by copious amounts of Aqua Net (hair spray to the uninitiated) and hair bands, it seemed a good idea to call this shop Wild Side. The plan was heaven filled with zebra print spandex and neon splashed everything. I can still see the logo with it's spiky animal print lettering. In my mind, it was glorious in it's 80's kitsch.
For obvious reasons, that look didn’t age well and was best left behind, but it turns out my tendency towards the darker aesthetic was a better bet for longevity. Life being what it is, the ability and opportunity to open a store had to wait for me to acquire some life lessons and some maturity. Much more of the former than the latter, I think.
Watch for episode 3, where we examine the job that taught me so much about wholesalers and absolutely zip about running a retail business.
See you soon!
